Is matcha cheaper in Japan?

By Mio.K

Everyone who has bought matcha in Kyoto comes home with the same impression: it was half the price. It is a fair impression, and in 2026 it is only part of the story.

Yes, matcha is usually cheaper in Japan, often by 40 to 60 percent for the same tin from the same maker. Ippodo's Ikuyo costs ¥1,188 in Japan, about $8, against $17 at its US store. But Japanese prices are rising sharply this autumn, the best tins are rationed or sold out, and the gap is narrowing. If you are in Japan, buy there. If you are not, the saving is rarely enough to justify the effort of getting it.

I buy tea in Japan for this shop, and these figures come from the makers' own Japanese and US online shops, checked in September 2026. I have converted yen at ¥150 to the dollar.

The same tin, two prices

Matcha In Japan (tax included) In Japan from 1 October 2026 In the US
Ippodo Ikuyo, 20 g ¥1,188 (about $8) ¥1,512 (about $10) $17
Ippodo Wakaki, 20 g ¥864 (about $6) ¥1,080 (about $7) $11
Ippodo Kan, 20 g ¥1,728 (about $12) ¥2,160 (about $14) $22
Ippodo Kuon, 20 g ¥6,480 (about $43) ¥9,720 (about $65) $64
Marukyu Koyamaen Aoarashi, 40 g ¥2,160 (about $14) Unchanged so far $38 (US distributor)
Marukyu Koyamaen Wakō, 20 g ¥2,484 (about $17), out of stock — $44 (US distributor)

Two things stand out. The everyday tins are roughly half price in Japan. And at the top of the range the gap has almost closed: after 1 October, Ippodo's Kuon costs about the same in Kyoto as it does in the US, because Ippodo is raising its Japanese prices by 20 to 50 percent this autumn and holding its US matcha prices until early 2027.

Why it costs more in the US

Not mainly because of duty. Plain green tea, including matcha, has no base import duty into the United States. The difference is the usual chain: international freight, a US importer or the maker's own US company, warehousing, and a retailer. A 20 g tin carries all of that on a very small base price, so the markup looks large.

The other half of the story is what has happened in Japan. Tencha, the leaf matcha is ground from, sold at its first auction of 2026 for close to double the previous year's price. What happened to matcha prices in 2026 has the detail. Japanese prices are catching up with that; US prices will follow.

Cheaper, if you can buy it

The price in Japan only matters if the tin is on the shelf. In 2026 many of the best-known houses limit purchases. Marukyu Koyamaen's online shop allows no more than five matcha items per order, sells some grades only on certain days, and will not ship to hotels or forwarding companies. Several of its tins are out of stock as I write. The house that is cheapest on paper may not sell you anything at all. Where to buy matcha in Kyoto lists what each shop allows.

Tools are where Japan is clearly cheaper

The gap on tea utensils is wider and steadier than on matcha. Everyday Mino-yaki bowls sell in Japanese tableware shops for ¥1,300 to ¥2,200, about $9 to $15, where the same kind of bowl costs $40 or more in the US. A hand-split 100-prong Takayama whisk is about ¥6,900 at Ippodo in Kyoto, roughly $46, when it is in stock. If you are in Japan and want tools, that is where the savings are.

Tax-free shopping, and what changes in November

Japan's consumption tax is 8 percent on food, including matcha, and 10 percent on everything else, including bowls and whisks. Visitors can shop tax-free at participating stores when they spend ¥5,000 or more.

From 1 November 2026 the system changes. You pay the full price including tax in the shop; customs checks the goods when you leave Japan, within 90 days of purchase; and the shop then refunds the tax. The old sealed bags for food and cosmetics, and the upper limit on consumables, disappear. Keep your receipts and leave time at the airport.

Bringing it home is simple, as long as you declare it: flying home with matcha and incense covers security and US customs.

Questions I get asked

Is matcha cheaper in Japan?

Usually, by 40 to 60 percent for everyday tins from the same maker. At the top of the range the gap is small, and Japanese prices are rising sharply from October 2026.

How much is matcha in Japan?

A 20 g tin of everyday matcha from a Kyoto house costs about ¥900 to ¥2,200, roughly $6 to $15, in autumn 2026. Top grades run from about ¥6,000 to over ¥16,000 for 20 g.

How much is a matcha set in Japan?

Ippodo's beginner kit is ¥8,800, about $59, rising to ¥9,130 in October 2026. Bought separately, an everyday bowl is ¥1,300 to ¥2,200 and a Takayama whisk about ¥6,900.

Can tourists buy matcha tax-free in Japan?

Yes, at participating shops, for purchases of ¥5,000 or more. From 1 November 2026 you pay tax at the till and the shop refunds it after customs confirms your departure.

Why is matcha so much more expensive in the US?

Freight, importing, warehousing and retail margins, all carried on a small tin. Plain matcha has no base US import duty.

Where this fits

If you are not traveling to Japan, the point of buying from Japan is choice rather than price. I keep two matchas, one for whisking and one for every day, and the tools to make them with, starting from the starter set. For why the powder costs what it does at all, see why matcha is so expensive.

Tomari (とまり) is an old word for a mooring — the place a boat ties up for the night. A bowl of tea is meant to be the same: a few minutes to put the day down. You do not need to know the rules to begin.

Who chose this

I choose everything here by hand, in Japan. I practice tea rather than simply selling the tools for it — I am not a tea master and I do not claim to be. I am a practitioner, which mostly means I have ruined enough bad whisks to know what a good one feels like in the first second of holding it.

Nothing is drop-shipped and nothing passes through a third warehouse. I pack each order in Tokyo and post it from Japan, ceramics double-boxed by hand. If something arrives broken, write within 7 days with photographs of the piece and the box, and I send a replacement or a refund; there is nothing to post back unless I ask. Who writes and chooses all this, and the longer version of why this shop exists.
