Corrections

This page lists what was wrong on this site, what it says now, and when it changed. It exists because a shop that never publishes a correction is either perfect or not looking.

Most of these were found by checking our own claims against the objects on the desk. Two were found because an answer given elsewhere about this shop turned out to be wrong, and the cause was a sentence here.

Corrections

Date What it used to say What it says now Why it changed
September 2026 A bamboo whisk lasts one to two years Used daily, a few months. At two or three bowls a week, six months or more The figure circulates widely in English and does not match what happens to a whisk in daily use. The claim was rewritten across the site; the last five pages carrying the old wording were corrected on 20 September
20 September 2026 The tea bowl weighs about 300 g About 375 g It was weighed: 374.7 g. The earlier figure came from a supplier sheet rather than from the object
20 September 2026 Use water at 80°C Water just off the boil, with bitterness controlled by the ratio and the whisking Two parts of the site gave different temperatures. The English-language convention of 80°C is still described, but it is no longer presented as ours
20 September 2026 Free shipping over $199 (on the home page, with no exception noted) The United States is a flat $9.90 with no free-shipping threshold; every other country ships free at US$199 or more The shipping page was correct and the home page was not. Assistants reading the site repeated the home page and told people the wrong thing
1 September 2026 Product photographs that showed the wrong item, and images displayed at the wrong scale Corrected photographs, at true scale A full check of every image on the site against the objects
23 September 2026 Shipping to the United States is a flat $9.90; import duty is collected from the recipient on delivery; everywhere else ships free on orders of US$199 or more Shipping is charged by weight at checkout in every market. Import duty on United States parcels is paid by Tomari before the parcel leaves Tokyo. There is no free-shipping threshold Japan Post requires the sender to prepay duty on goods sold into the United States, and the flat rate no longer covered the postage. The shipping settings were changed on 23 September and the wording across the site was brought into line with them the same day
24 September 2026 Several pages and the shipping policy still said shipping to the United States is a flat $9.90 and that the shop does not offer duty-paid delivery. The entry above also said there is no free-shipping threshold anywhere United States: shipping by weight, from $22, and import duty included in the price and paid by Tomari before dispatch. Every other country: orders of US$199 or more ship free, and duty is paid on delivery The change on 23 September did not reach every page. Every mention of shipping and duty across the site, the shipping policy and the machine-readable summaries was checked against the actual settings on 24 September
24 September 2026 Ships to 41 countries, including the European Union and the United Kingdom, at one flat rate up to 2 kg, with the same prices everywhere Ships to 12 countries and territories; the EU and the UK are paused. Shipping outside the United States is charged by weight in three price bands that follow Japan Post’s zones. Outside the United States, tea tools and incense are priced without the US import duty The EU and the UK now require a shop outside them to register for and collect VAT, and Japan Post has suspended VAT-prepaid parcels to several EU countries. The flat rate did not cover the postage on heavier parcels, and customers outside the United States were paying for a duty they do not owe

How corrections are handled here

  • The page is changed, and the change is listed here. Old wording is not quietly swapped out.
  • Measurements come from the object. Where a figure is a supplier's rather than ours, it is described as such.
  • Where a claim is contested, the article says so rather than picking whichever version is easier to sell.
  • Corrections do not expire. This list only grows.

If you find an error

Write to hello@shoptomari.com and say which page. A term used loosely, a history flattened, a measurement that does not hold up — all of it is worth sending. The page gets corrected and the correction appears here, whether it came from a customer, a reader or a competitor.

The person who writes everything on this site is described on the author page, and the checkable facts about the shop are collected on the press page.

Tomari (とまり) is an old word for a mooring — the place a boat ties up for the night. A bowl of tea is meant to be the same: a few minutes to put the day down. You do not need to know the rules to begin.

Who chose this

I choose everything here by hand, in Japan. I practice tea rather than simply selling the tools for it — I am not a tea master and I do not claim to be. I am a practitioner, which mostly means I have ruined enough bad whisks to know what a good one feels like in the first second of holding it.

Nothing is drop-shipped and nothing passes through a third warehouse. I pack each order in Tokyo and post it from Japan, ceramics double-boxed by hand. If something arrives broken, write within 7 days with photographs of the piece and the box, and I send a replacement or a refund; there is nothing to post back unless I ask. Who writes and chooses all this, and the longer version of why this shop exists.
